The Q's sold off hard again today setting a low on our 3 day hard sell off @ 76.35 before rebounding to close @ 76.96.  The downtrend ended on the 5 minute chart but not the 15 nor the 60 minute.  For tomorrow, if we gap down or trade through the 76.88 area, I'd look to short the first 5 minute sell that triggers at 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time.  Low targets will be 76.44 - 76.35 and an ultimate lower target of the 75.00 area may be hit.  If we happen to trade through or gap above the 77.36 area, I'd look to take the first 5 minute buy that occurs near this same area preferable @ a reversal time with a long target of 77.60 area.  If we happen to open neutral and go sideways which is very possible after such a large sell off, then I'd wait for a breakout above 77.32 or a breakdown below 76.88 to decide on the direction but wait for the pull back to make your entry.

The Q's opened neutral this morning @ 77.42 then proceeded to sell off into 9:50 reversal time.  Price rallied 10 minutes then rolled back over triggering my first pivot entry short in the Q's.  Price continued lower until 10:15 then marched back up to break the first lower pivot of the day but falling short of the open and at 10:30 reversal time, the QQQ triggered the first textbook sell where I added another 1/3rd to my position.  From here, we were off to races lower, my first target was at the low of day @ .70 where I covered a few of my shares.  Then, price flurried lower where I covered again @ .61, .51, and .41.  Price set the low of the day by 11:15 reversal time @ 76.35 and has since bounced ending the down trend on the 5 minute chart.  My play in the QQQ trailed out @ .46.  A very nice 1 1/2 "R"isk unit play on partial shares.  Price is currently sideways on the 5 minute chart trading between 76.91 and 77.25.

Today’s hard sell off in the market ended the Daily uptrend in the QQQ.  Now for you long term investors, this does not mean were in a down tend, we could go sideways. One thing is for sure, we are going to test the 75.20 area sooner then later. Currently the 5 and 15 minute charts are sideways bouncing between 77.70 and 77.20. For Wednesday, after a wide range bar, expect a narrow range day.  Be quick to take your profits, expect a chippy, choppy day.  If we happen to open or trade below the 77.20 area, I’d look to take the first 5 minute sell slightly below this area with a low target of 76.00 and a 2nd lower target @ 74.90.  If we happen to gap up or trade above the 77.70 area, you could take the first 2 or 5 minute buy that triggers at 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time.  Your long targets are 78.00 and 78.30, then I’d be looking to get short maybe a fade over lunch time…

The Q’s opened pretty neutral this morning @ 78.75 and immediately set the high of the day within the first 15 minutes of trading @ 78.81.  Then the 5 minute low was taken out and a pivot low was set by 10 am reversal time.  The market rallied into 10:20 triggering the first sell on the 5 minute chart and it has been all over for longs as the market plummeted breaking the last pivot low @ 78.00 and ending the uptrend on the daily chart.  Currently price action is very week with the low of the day set @ 77.19 by 2:20 pm reversal time.

My play of the day was in WMT which I found using my 9:45 wide range bar scan but at 10:00 am since I had no stocks that qualified to be on my list @ 9:45 am.  This happens sometimes so I wait for the first 30 minute bars to close on the 30 minute chart.  Usually I’d have something else to trade, but today I found myself with a really short list of stocks.  WMT had a nice solid 30 minute bar so I started to watch it closely until price had a small 2 bar pull back on the 5 minute chart.  Not a textbook entry but WMT had huge relative strength compared with the market and since we were near 11:15 am reversal time,  I thought that the market may start to show some strength, and a long trade would be the right play.  Once I entered the play above .89 with 1/3rd lot size, I found myself already offering out shares as price flurried upward, a market gift as some traders describe.  WMT then faded slightly but soon triggered a pretty nice buy setup where I added back another 1/3rd lot to my remaining share size.  Then price ground it’s way upward as price put in 7 green consecutive bars on the 5 minute chart allowing me to offer more shares out for profit.  I had raised my stop to just below the 5 minute pivot after my last 1/3rd add, which I thought might hold through lunch, but shortly @ 12:30 pm my last trailing shares were sold for a slight profit.  Not bad, a full “R”isk unit made using a partial share size to start, demonstrating the power of “Add and Reduce.”

Market play in the QQQ for Tuesday, October 8th, 2013 and TraderHank’s stock picks

After a huge gap down in the QQQ this morning and a hard rally back up near the top of the last pivot high, the Q's plummeted in late day trading to finish the day at almost where price started @ 78.74.  We are currently in a downtrend on the 5 and 15 minute charts but sideways on the hourly time frame.  For Tuesday if we break below the 78.65 area, I'd look to short the first 5 minute sell that triggers in this same area @ 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time, with a target of the 78.30 area and lower targets of 78.00 and 77.70 areas.  If we happen to open neutral and rally, I'd be looking for a 5 minute sell setup in the 79.00 area that triggers to get short with the same lower targets as mentioned above.  If we happen trade through or gap above the 79.20 area, I'd like to see a base through lunch before attempting a long on a breakout.  At this point I believe that all rallies are short able and most important the void is to the downside on the Daily chart of the QQQ.

QQQ closing update and TraderHank’s scalp trade in TOL

The Q's opened with a huge gap down today @ 78.72 and immediately set the low of the day @ 78.67 in an area of major support.  Price then rallied hard into 10:30 am reversal time and set the high of the day @ 79.35.  Price began to sell off into 1:00 pm to make a higher pivot low @ 78.83,  then price rallied upward into 2:00 pm but falling way short of the high of the day before rolling over and heading lower.  Price sold off hard into the close where we ended the day where we started 78.72.

QQQ 10072013
QQQ 10072013

My play of the day came in TOL which I found on my gap down list.  I put TOL on my gap down list but the stock did not even score using my gap scoring system.  If a stock does not score, I treat it like it's a Tier III gap, which means that it has to do something special for me to trade it.  Price action in TOL immediately filled the gap within the first 30 minutes, usually price will roll back over and head lower, but not TOL.  Price action went sideways and became bullish at 11:15 am reversal time and finally breaking out by 11:30 am.  This bullish pattern is called a "A gap that bullies", and is a very reliable pattern to trade.  I missed the first pull back which moved up nicely, so I stuck around waiting for another setup and soon I was rewarded.  TOL triggered a 5 minute buy right at 1:30 pm reversal time.  I priced it for a 10 cent stop and I was looking for a nice clean 10 cent profit at the high of the day for TOL.  My only concern was that we were 5 green bars up on the hourly chart with 30 minutes to go in the current green bar.  TOL inched its way upward over a 30 minute period, by 20 minutes in the play, I thought TOL might not make it.  A new hourly bar would be forming and the likely hood that the next bar would be red was high.  On the last 5 minute bar price in TOL hit my target and my shares were sold on the offer @ .28 cents.  A nice 1 "R"isk unit trade in TOL which I was glad to have profited because at 2:00 pm TOL headed lower as the hourly sell soon triggered.

10/06/2013 Before making a trade, is the market environment good enough for you to catch up if you take a loss?

Share Button

On Friday Robert Shapiro, head moderator of Affinity’s Online Trading Room (OTR), made a comment that I thought was something to think about when you find yourself with a short stock list for trading and you might be down a Risk unit or two.  At this point you must ask yourself, is the environment good enough for you to catch up on your loss? You could be even for the day, after the morning session, and not really have a powerful list of stocks to work with for the afternoon.  You might want to take the rest of the day off instead of risking a losing day, on a day that there would be no way to recover.  I’ve found myself in this same scenario many times and have become completely frustrated and basically blown up my account for the day and making it almost impossible to recover for the week.  When you’re struggling and your plays are not going the way you had expected and you have a short list that is really lacking; leave!

10/08/2013  Just had this thought, many times poor trading day’s turn into poor trading weeks as mentioned in a prior blog.  Good days are followed my more good days, and the reverse is true.  So turning a poor day into a worse day can make it impossible to catch up during a poor week.  Example, right now is not earnings season, thus our morning selection is really not that great for gap plays.  Our setups are not as reliable as a true blue earnings play and therefore we should not be as aggressive during this time in the market.  In fact many Gap only players go away during non-earnings season, a good idea when you think about it…

Market play in the QQQ for Monday, October 7th, 2013 and TraderHank’s stock picks

After the huge sell off into 12 noon on Friday in the QQQ, prices did recover and currently we find the Q’s in a 15 minute uptrend just shy of the pivot high @ 79.76, the Q’s closed @ 79.41.  For Monday, if we open neutral and trade or gap above the 79.50 area this would confirm our up trend continuation and I’d look to take the first 2 or 5 minute buy setup that triggers near the 79.50 area with my first target at the pivot high @ 79.76 and my 2nd target would be the 80.00 dollar area.  If we happen to open neutral and go sideways, I’d look to play the first buy or sell setup after the breakout above the 79.50 area or a breakdown below the 79.30 area.  If we happen to open and trade below or gap below the 79.30 area, I’d be looking to take the first short that triggers on the 5 or 15 minute chart preferably at or near a reversal time.  My lower targets are the 79.00 area and 78.65, then 78.30.  My bias is lower since the 60 minute chart looks a bit over extended and this is the area we should see an hourly sell trigger in the QQQ.  Keep trading!

QQQ afternoon closing update and TraderHank’s play of the day in the Market

The Q's opened up neutral @ 78.72 and immediately set the low of the day @ 78.65 and based for the first 15 minutes before breaking out to the upside.  The Q's did a two bar pull back and triggered it's first buy @ 10 am reversal time.  I entered the play with 1/3rd lot as I wanted a little more confirmation that price was going to continue long.  As the trigger bar closed green, I added an additional 1/3rd lot as price pushed up to set the morning high by 10:35 reversal time @ 79.24 and I sold a few shares @ .23.  Price then faded into 11:15 reversal time triggering another 5 minute buy which also triggered the 15 minute buy as well.  I added back some shares and price moved on up to may 2nd target @ .33 were I sold some additional shares.  Price faded over lunch where I sold my last remaining shares @ .29 as the market looked like it might start to come in, but this was only a head fake as price ground its way upward setting the high for the day @ 79.51 by 3:10 pm.  The Q's faded slightly to close this 4th day of October 2013, @ 79.45.  A little over 1 Risk unit made on the trade, not bad for what really was a quiet day on Wall Street...  Have a great weekend everyone!

After a huge sell off in the QQQ this morning, the Q's retraced to about the 40% Fib level before triggering an hourly sell with a 2 bar pull back.  The 15 minute sell triggered just before but price could not take out the lower pivot in the 78.30 area.  Looking at the hourly and 15 minute charts, it looks like price may want to continue lower from here, the daily has room to the 78.00 level.  For tomorrow if the Q's open neutral and trade down or gaps down below the 78.35 level, I'd look to take the first 5 minute sell setup that occurs near 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time near this same area of 78.35 with a low price target of 78.00 and a second lower target of 77.65 area.  If price rallies at the open or gaps above the 79.00 level, I'd look to take the first buy setup that triggers on the 5 minute chart preferably at a reversal time and my long target would be back up to the high of 79.70 and a longer target @ 80.00.  If price opens neutral and goes sideways, I'd look to take take the breakout near a reversal time in either direction.
