QQQ morning update and TradeHank’s screw up in LLY

The QQQ opened neutral @ 79.55 and immediately set the high for the day so far @ 79.72 and sold off hard.  In the pre-market price had already traded below major support @ 79.48 area which was a hint of where price was heading first.  Price continued to sell off hard into 10:45 am to set the low temporarily @ 78.80 then price rallied to about a 30% retracement before triggering the 2nd sell setup as short traders hammered the market lower.  The market may have just hit the low here @ 11:50 pm near the 12:00 noon reversal time @ 78.45.

My trade of the morning came in LLY which I found on my list as a beautiful Tier III gap.  I usually wait for a proper buy or sell entry, but when the first sold 5 minute red bar took out major support in the 50.07 area, I felt comfortable shorting the 5 minute low. Even though, LLY soon gave another entry as a 1234 on the 5 minute chart as price sold off in a flurry lower.  My first target was hit @ .51 and I had offers all the way down to the ultimate target of 48.50 but I had a "FAT" finger moment and accidentally sold all of my shares @ .48 cents, Ouch!  My beautiful play in LLY turned out to be only 1 "R" unit of profit.  But really, these are the mistakes that you want to see, when you still make money 🙂

The QQQ ended the day by ending the uptrend on the 5 minute chart to close @ 79.65 but this does not mean were in a downtrend, we could go sideways Thursday morning. If we open neutral and trade or gap above the 79.76 area this would continue the uptrend on the 5 minute chart and I would look to take the first 5 or 15 minute buy that triggers at 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time with a target of 80.00.  If we open and trade through or gap below the 79.45 area, then I’d look to take the first sell setup that occurs on the 5 or 15 minute chart at 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time with a low target @ 79.10 area and a real lower target @ the 78.70 area.  With both scenarios a 123 pattern or base breakout or breakdown could also be used as an entry.

QQQ morning update and TraderHank’s play in the QQQ and TGT

The QQQ gaped below the last pivot low @ 79.30 to open @ 79.14 ending the uptrend on the 5 and 15 minute time frames.  The Q's rallied into 10:00 am reversal time and triggered the first sell set up in the market.  If you read my pre-market update from last night, you knew what to do.  Why write about it and not take the play :(???  So I shorted the Q's with 1/3rd share size as the short triggered early on the new 5 minute bar.  As the bar closed, price snapped back up and put in a bottoming tail, I thought I might have to kill my entry, but I hung with it to see what the next 5 minute bar would look like after it closed.  The next bar closed red, then the next bar was an inside narrow range red bar and I decided that if the next bar takes out the low, I'd add another 1/3rd to my position and that is exactly what happened.  Price sold off into a flurry and the low of day was soon hit where I covered 1/3rd @ .13 and I covered 1/2 of what I had left @ .13 cents.  I left the rest of my shares at a break even stop @ .29 with the intention of adding back and reducing my stop.  Not knowing, I just covered near the low of the day in the QQQ by 10:10 reversal time @ 79.06 as the market rallied back up into minor support taking out my stop and continuing upward and is still trading near the highs of the day here during lunch at 12:15 pm @ 79.73.

My other play came in TGT which I found looking for a 5 minute high or low momentum play.  Today, I had no gap plays to look at so my trading plan allows for me to substitute a momentum play which is basically the same as my 9:45 wide range bar play but it's a little more aggressive.  As I began to watch TGT and 9:45 came, TGT made my 9:45 am wide range bar scan as well.  My first entry came on the 1 and 2 minute charts as price pulled in to trigger the first sell  in TGT.  I entered with 1/3rd share size as TGT sold off hard testing the lows again but price could not make a new low. Price then rallied back to above my entry price before rolling over with the market at 10 am reversal time.  I added another 1/3rd lot to my shares short and I was soon rewarded as price fell nicely as I covered a few shares @ .30 and more when the low of the day was taken out @.23.  I was able to add and reduce my stop twice on the play but soon I was forced to cover my final shares at .25 as a series of bullish bars started to form @ 11 am.  Two nice plays to start this 2nd day of October 🙂

The QQQ opened neutral this morning @ 78.66 and took off higher triggering a 5 minute buy at 10 am reversal time and never looked back.  Price powered upward setting the high of the day by 12:30 pm @ 79.72 then faded the afternoon until 3:30 pm reversal time when price took off again to the upside and closing near the high of the day @ 79.68.

I’m expecting the Q’s to gap up for Wednesday morning and if so, I’d look to take the first 5 or 15 minute buy that triggers near the 79.60 area, the first obvious target would be the 80.00 dollar level.  If price happens to open neutral and fall from this area, I’d look to short the 2nd higher low on the 5 minute chart with the expectations of price moving through the 79.32 area with the first target @ the 79.20 area.  If we happen to gap below the 79.32 area I’d be looking to take the first short that triggers on the 5 minute chart @ 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time.

The QQQ ended Friday’s trading day @ 79.06 and currently in a presumed 5 minute uptrend.  Price has been basically sideways on the hourly chart with the QQQ trading between the 79.40 and 78.40 areas.  If the QQQ opens neutral or with a gap up on Monday, I’d look to take the first buy setup that triggers on the 5 minute chart in the 79.20 area with a long target of the 79.60 area.  If we happen to trade or gap below the 78.90 area and head lower, I’d look to take the first sell setup that triggers at 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time on the 5 minute chart.  My bias is long and I would not be surprised to see the QQQ run up to challenge the 79.60 sometime during the trading day on Monday.

After today’s gap up and the QQQ triggering a daily buy, I’d have to believe that the Q’s will continue higher.  Even though my bias is long, for the last two days, short traders have been making a bundle on pull backs. For Friday, if we open neutral or gap up slightly, I’d look for the first 5 minute buy that triggers to enter long with a target between the 79.32 and 70.35 areas.  If we happen to gap up to the 79.35 area, I’d wait for the uptrend to end on the 2 minute chart at 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time before I’d look to enter short on a 5 minute sell that triggers in the market.  If we happen to open neutral and begin to trade below the prior pivot on the 5 minute chart or gap below the 78.93 area, I’d look for the first higher low on the 2 minute chart to get long with the same long targets as above, a 5 or 15 minute buy at 10 am or 10:30 reversal time would be preferred.  I’d look short only if we happen to trade below the 78.84 area or gap below this area, then I’d take the first short on the 5 or 15 minute time frame that triggers with a low target of 77.65.  Click on chart to enlarge…

The QQQ had a bullish gap up to open @ 78.88 triggering the daily buy and rallied up to set the high of the day by 10 am reversal time @ 79.36.  Price went sideways until 10:30 then unexpectedly sold off hard into 11:05.  At 11:15 reversal time price started it’s way back up to the high and made a lower high by 1:10 pm @ 79.31.  The bears took over since the Q’s could not make a higher high after this mornings bullish gap as price sold off hard into 2:35 pm but failed to make a lower low and bouncing off of the 78.95 area.  Price retested  the 78.95 area and rallied into the close to end the day’s trading @ 79.18 way short of the high of day.

My play of the day came in LLY which I found this morning as a pretty nice bearish Tier II gap on the daily chart.  My entry was on a 2 minute sell setup @ 9:55 am  reversal time with a partial share size.  I was soon able to add to my short twice more before price hit my first target low of the day @ 51.05 where I sold 1/3rd of my lot size.  I was able to add back later @ 51.05  and later I covered the shares added @ 50.78.  Again I was able to add back @ .73 and later covered another 1/3rd @ 50.50.  I held my last 3rd, because the pre-market low had been 49.23, for as long as I could but finally I was squeezed out to sell my final lot @ 50.44.  6 “R”isk units on the play were made, a truly wonderful trade…

Some great waves in the market today but tricky at times when the market seems not to know where it wants to go.  Price ended the day in a sideways trend from the 78.70 to 78.55 area.  On the daily the Q's is forming a GBI (green bar ignored) which gives me a short bias for tomorrow's trading.  If we open neutral, I'd wait for the breakout or breakdown of the consolidation and I'd play the first pull back long or short on the 5 or 15 minute chart preferably at 10 am or 10:30 am reversal time.  On a gap lower below the 78.39 area and price sells off, then, I'd look to take the first 5 or 15 minute sell that triggers near this same area on a retracement. a lower target will be the 77.65 area  If the gap does not clear the 78.39 area and price starts to rally, I'd look to take the first buy that triggers on the 5 minute chart with a long target of 78.80 area and a 2nd longer target @ 78.93 area.  If we happen to gap up above the 78.80 area and rally, I'd look for the first 5 or 15 minute buy that triggers at 10 or 10:30 am reversal time with a long target @ 79.00.   The chart is getting a bit tight until we break out of this area, I'd be quick to take profits, a 1 "R"isk unit gain has been a gift lately for many traders.  Click on chart to enlarge...

The Q’s opened up neutral @ 78.88 and headed lower breaking the prior low pivot made on Monday @ 78.45 to set the day’s low @ 78.40 by 10:10 reversal time and confirming the 60 minute down trend was still intact.   Price then rallied into 10:40 and triggered our first 5 minute sell in the market.  Price came down until 11:15 reversal time and started its move higher without setting a new lower low ending our downtrend on the 5 minute chart.  Price rallied breaking out above the open and setting the high of the day @ 79.00 by 12:15 pm.  By 12:20 price had broken down hard and took out the prior pivot on the 5 minute chart ending the uptrend.  Price drifted sideways over lunch to further break down at 1:00 pm.  Price sold off hard into 1:55 pm to 78.48 near the lows for the day.  From here, price drifted sideways once again into the close between 78.70 and 78.55 breaking the high of .70 for just a short time before continuing in this range.

My play of the day came in JCP which I found on my 9:45 wide range bar scan.  JCP really came through for me today as my morning ended with my P & L down -2 R’s.  JCP setup a 2nd 15 minute sell just as the market started to head lower @ 1:00 pm.  JCP had a nice -COG with a narrow range bar to enter short below.  Price soon dropped nicely with the market and my first target was hit @ .18 where I covered 1/3rd of my shares.  I had hoped that JCP would retest the lows of the day @ 9.94 but this would not be the case.  I hung in there as best as I ever could have and was eventually forced into covering another 1/3rd @ .17.  By 2:30 pm price headed lower again and I was hoping for the low of the day but the overall market went sideways and JCP stabilized and I trailed out of the play @ .13 with my last shares covered.  Overall I picked up almost 2 R’s on the play and with my short play in the QQQ I was able to end the day about even.  Scratch day, I’ll take it after a rough morning…

Wild ride in the QQQ today with a hard sell off in the morning followed by a huge rally then another late day sell off into the close.  Trader heaven for day traders and I expect more Volatility Wednesday.  This mornings rally looks like a 40% Fib retracement on the 60 minute chart.  If the downtrend is going to continue on the 60 minute time frame, the low @ the 78.50 area should be taken out tomorrow, so my bias is short.  Currently we are still in a 5 minute downtrend   If we gap up or rally up and stay below the the 79.11 area, I'd look to take the first 5 or 15 minute sell that triggers with a target of the 78.50 area and a 2nd lower target of 77.75.  If we happen to gap down, I'd look to take the first 15 minute sell that triggers at 10:30 am reversal time near the 79.00 area.  I'd look long if we happen to gap above the 79.11 area and rally, then I'd look to take the first 5 minute buy that triggers near 10 or 10:30 am reversal time.
